Mini Course Generator vs Thinkific: plans, limits and which one fits

Last materially reviewed 2026-10-03

Quick answerMini Course Generator suits short lessons shared by link, from $39 a month billed annually. Thinkific suits a full course business with communities and memberships. Its US price could not be read.

Mini Course Generator vs Thinkific in short

Mini Course Generator is the lighter tool for short lessons shared by link, and Thinkific is the fuller platform for running a course business with a branded site, communities and memberships. Which is cheaper I cannot say from the vendor pages alone, for a plain reason: on 3 October 2026 the Thinkific pricing page served its plan prices in euros, so this page quotes no Thinkific price.

What I can state: Mini Course Generator Plus is $49 a month billed monthly or $39 a month billed annually, and Pro is $99 or $79, as read on 3 October 2026. Thinkific's entry plan is called Basic, followed by Start, Grow and a sales-led Plus plan, and the page says annual billing saves 25%.

The two learner limits are counted differently. Mini Course Generator counts anyone who takes a course during the year. Thinkific counts students who currently have unexpired access to at least one course.

One thing each does that the other does not

Thinkific: a community and membership layer. Basic includes one community with a private feed and direct messages, Start adds memberships, subscriptions, bundles and live cohorts with Zoom sessions, and Grow adds group orders for selling seats to companies. Mini Course Generator lists community boards and a payment wall, but its pricing page lists no memberships, bundles or live sessions.

Mini Course Generator: export out of the platform. The vendor's pages disagree on export plans: the pricing page lists PDF export on Plus and Dynamic SCORM export on Pro, while a help article says PDF needs Pro and SCORM needs a plan called Elite. Either way a course can leave the platform as a file. On Thinkific's page, SCORM appears as content you import, and only on the Plus plan. Mini Course Generator also offers open access with no login, which matters when staff will not create accounts.

Who Mini Course Generator suits and who Thinkific suits

Mini Course Generator suits a small team that wants a ten-minute lesson on a procedure in front of staff this week, with a quiz and a downloadable report, and has fewer than 1,000 learners a year. The list of what each plan includes is in Mini Course Generator features.

Thinkific suits someone building a paid school: several long courses, video hosting, a sales site, memberships and a community. Its student allowance on Basic is twenty times the Plus learner allowance, although the two are measured differently. If selling is the goal and you want published dollar prices to compare, Mini Course Generator vs Teachable has them.

If you are still deciding whether you need a course tool or a full learning platform, read authoring tool or LMS first.

What switching between them involves

From Mini Course Generator to Thinkific, the only packaged route in the pages I read is SCORM: export Dynamic SCORM, which the pricing page lists on Pro, then import it on Thinkific Plus, the plan where Thinkific says SCORM is available. On lower Thinkific plans you would rebuild the lessons in its course builder. A PDF export gives you the text to paste, without videos or interactive items.

From Thinkific to Mini Course Generator, expect to rebuild. Thinkific lists video lessons on every plan, and Mini Course Generator limits uploaded videos to MP4 files of 100 MB each, so longer videos need to be embedded from YouTube or Vimeo instead. Learner progress and certificates do not transfer in either direction. Download your reports and learner lists before you cancel either tool.
