A mini course is a short course with one outcome
A mini course is a short online course built to teach one specific thing in one sitting: a single task, rule or decision, followed by a quick check that the learner got it. It is smaller than a full course with modules and weeks of material, and more structured than a document, because it is split into pages the learner moves through in order and usually ends with questions.
There is no official length. As a reference point, the Mini Course Generator help center says 15 to 20 pages at most, or about a 10-minute completion time, are common for keeping learners engaged, and adds that these are not rules. The same vendor says "mini" describes the bite-sized structure and that its editor sets no cap on length.
How a mini course works, step by step
- One outcome. You name the one thing the learner should be able to do afterward, such as issue a refund correctly.
- Short pages. The content is cut into pages, each with one idea: a step, an example, a picture or a short video.
- Checks along the way. Question pages ask the learner to choose or answer, so reading turns into practice.
- A closing page. The last page shows a score, a message that depends on the score, or a badge.
- A link. Learners open the course from a link or an embedded page.
- A record. The tool records who finished and how they answered.
If you are unsure whether your material needs this structure at all, document or mini course walks through the choice.
Worked example: a 12-page mini course with real numbers
Take a returns procedure at [your business] with nine steps. A mini course for it might have one opening page, seven content pages that group the steps, two scenario questions, a closing page and a final five-question quiz, which is the default quiz length in Mini Course Generator's AI Course Builder.
If the AI drafts 12 pages with images, the help center's credit rules give the cost: 1 credit for the title, 1 for the outline and 2 for each page, so 1 + 1 + 24 = 26 credits. With AI images switched off it is 1 + 1 + 12 = 14 credits. The Plus plan includes 1,000 credits a month, so either figure is a small share.
If 30 staff take it, that uses 30 of the 500 learners a year that Plus allows. Plus costs $49 a month billed monthly or $39 a month billed annually, as read on 3 October 2026. The build steps are in how to create a mini course.
How a mini course differs from a full course and a document
| Point | Document | Mini course | Full course |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scope | Reference for everything | One outcome | A whole subject |
| Structure | Headings | Ordered pages with questions | Modules and lessons |
| Time to finish | Read as needed | One sitting | Days or weeks |
| Check of understanding | None built in | Quiz or scenario pages | Quizzes, assignments, sometimes certificates |
| Record of who finished | None built in | Completion report | Enrollment and progress records |
The formats work together. The document stays the source of truth, and the mini course teaches the part people must be able to do from memory.
Mistakes to avoid when planning a mini course
- Packing in several outcomes. If the title needs the word "and", split it into two mini courses.
- Publishing an AI draft unread. Generated pages can state things your procedure does not say. Use the checks in reviewing an AI draft.
- Treating a finished course as proof of skill. A completion record shows pages viewed and questions answered, as explained in completion is not competence.
- Leaving the source document out of date. If the written procedure changes, the mini course must change with it.
When a paid tool is worth it for mini courses
You can make a first mini course without paying. 7taps has a Free plan that shares two courses by link or QR code, and TalentCards has a Free plan for up to five users. Mini Course Generator gives 14 days of full access without a credit card.
A paid plan is worth it when you need more than a couple of courses live at once, a report of who completed each one, or control over who can open the link. At that point the steps differ in size. Mini Course Generator Plus is $49 a month billed monthly. 7taps moves from Free to $4,995 a year. TalentCards paid plans start at 50 users, which is $50 a month on monthly billing.
